Discovered Technique Creating 3D Photos with Flickr
Computer scientists have discovered how to create models of three-dimensional (3D) from using photos landmarks and geographic locations that are available on sites like Flickr.
This technique will create and combines millions of images, processing them on a single PC with graphics hardware that is done in less than a day.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina and ETH-Zurich used all three million online images of Rome available to reconstruct all the major landmarks of the city. They also reconstruct the landmarks of Berlin in the same way.
UNC Professor Jan-Michael Frahm said this process a thousand times more efficient than existing systems like Microsoft Photosynth.“Our technique will be the same with a stack of photo processing as high as 828 meters at the Dubai Towers by using only one PC,” he said, as reported by TG Daily, Wednesday (24/11/2010).If the available videos can also be inserted with the privilege of shortening the time required in the reconstruction process model.
Frahm said that eventually the model can be embedded into applications like Google Earth or Maps Bing, which allows users to explore the city online.
It also could be a useful element of disaster response software. For example, aircraft can be sent to retrieve the video after the hurricane, and 3-D models produced can be used to assess the damage from a remote location.
